1. What is the premise/pitch for your book and who needs this book and why?
The A-to-Z Teaching Toolkit for Early Childhood and Elementary Educators (Routledge, 2025) is a tried-and-true, one-stop shop for the contemporary classroom, packed with practical strategies and systems for teachers at every stage of their career. Each chapter features research-backed ideas, examples of classroom visuals, a step-by-step action plan, a wishlist of materials, and five picture book recommendations that support each concept.
The A-to-Z Teaching Toolkit was created for educators, caregivers, families, and picture book authors to make a meaningful impact on young learners.
2. What are 5 things you want people to know about your book?
- The book is a “choose-your-own alphabet adventure” that can begin and end at any letter
- Crucial topics like neurodiversity, representation, and equity vs. equality are covered with practical ways to increase inclusivity in the classroom
- Each chapter highlights five hand-selected picture books that supplement the ideals presented
- Topics serve both educators and families. Each chapter includes a note to families that differentiates each topic
- In each chapter, readers can find visual examples, a wishlist of items, the real-world connection, frequently asked questions, and 3 easy steps to get started!
3. What helpful hints or tips can you offer fellow writers about writing, publishing, and promoting a book?
- Make a Google/Excel sheet of information as you plan for your release. This has allowed me to keep track of all emails, endorsers, arcs, reviews, contacts, and those I still plan to reach out to.
- Watch as many webinars and online videos as you can about marketing and promotion. I also watched hours of reels learning how to do unique things on Canva and promote my material.
- Celebrate others in the writing world, form relationships, and keep in touch with critique partners. They can become your biggest cheerleaders when your book is born!
4. What are 5 fun/quirky facts about yourself as an adult or child?
- I used to sing and perform for Radio Disney as a kid!
- In college, I was part of a competitive a cappella group–we made it to ICCA (International Council of Collegiate A Cappella–the competition at the end of the movie Pitch Perfect)
- I love making themed charcuterie boards and spending way too much money at HomeGoods on tiny, adorable items for my boards
- I tend to read the last page of a book after a few chapters (I know, I know!! I can’t help myself!!)
- I could eat Rigatoni with Rao’s marinara sauce every day for the rest of my life. I even have a tiny bowtie noodle tattoo on my wrist!
5. What did you learn about yourself while on the journey to publishing this book?
I learned that when you are passionate about a topic and have personal experience/emotional attachment to the content, the words just flow! I believe in the words I wrote, and I know how much of an impact these systems and strategies made on my journey as an educator. I learned to trust myself, push myself, and explore new genres of writing—as I’d only done picture books before this manuscript!
