1. What is the premise/pitch for your book?

Long ago, turtles didn’t have shells and were fast. In fact, Tortuga the turtle was one of the fastest runners in his village. But he wasn’t as fast or respected as the leader of the village, Mabella. When Tortuga sees a sorcerer gift, a mysterious, magical drum, he hatches a plan to steal it from her. But his jealousy will have disastrous consequences.

2. What are 5 things you want people to know about your book?

It is based on a story my paternal grandmother, who was a marvelous storyteller, used to tell me.

It’s a great introduction to folktales.

It can be used to teach about reptiles, specifically turtles.

It explains a real-world scenario in a playful manner.

By comparing stories, kids can explore how various cultures worldwide teach life lessons.

3. What helpful hints or tips can you offer fellow writers about writing, publishing, and promoting a book?

Writing: Don’t give up!

Put yourself out there.

Promoting your book takes time and energy.

Start your promotion before it’s published.

Don’t be afraid to cold-call bookstores.

4. What are 5 fun/quirky facts about yourself as an adult or child?

I’m famous among my friends for wearing funky socks and shoes that have Peanuts characters, dogs, and cats.

I love to eat lemons with salt.

My comfort food is black beans, Cuban style, with rice and fried plantains.

I worked as an elevator operator when I was in college.

I still downhill ski.

5. What did you learn about yourself while on the journey to publishing this book?

 Patience, lots of patience.

Trust your editor.
