1. What is the premise/pitch for your book?
Henny D has BIG thoughts, BIG feelings, and BIG things to say, and waiting to talk feels impossible. After one too many reminders to “please wait,” Henny D decides she’s had enough. It’s time to launch a brand-new campaign: Bring Back the Blurts! A school day where kids can talk whenever they want… especially her!
2. What are 5 things you want people to know about your book?
I am a grade one teacher, and this story is inspired by real events from my classroom.
Henny D is a deep-feeling kid with a lot of great feelings and a lot of spunk.
Henny D is so many kids, and for me, I want kids to feel seen.
The Adventures of Henny D is all about imagination, glitter, fun, and handling some big feelings.
Not only do I have two children’s books, but I also have published decodable readers, a journal, and a colouring book.
3. What helpful hints or tips can you offer fellow writers about writing, publishing, and promoting a book?
To write and publish because you love your story and believe in it. Success as a new, independent author means so many things, but it can be a bumpy road. Focus on your achievements; every glimmer is a success.
4. What are 5 fun/quirky facts about yourself as an adult or child?
I never imagined myself as a teacher, until I became one in my thirty’s.
I never imagined myself as an author until I became one at 50.
My books have been inspired by real events in my grade one classroom.
I love to knit and crochet.
When I was a kid, I did not like to read.
5. What did you learn about yourself while on the journey to publishing this book?
I learned that I was a writer. I never even dreamed of doing such a thing as writing a book, and here I am, with two books published. I learned that it is not an easy path, that marketing and promoting take a lot of time and effort, and sometimes fall flat. Most of all, I am learning to enjoy the journey.
