1. What is the premise/pitch for your book?
It’s about a little girl who’s great at just about everything, so she assumes she’ll be perfect at yoga poses too–her name is Pose-y, after all. But to her dismay, she can’t do the poses like the other kids. Frustrated, she quits. She continues other activities, but yoga won’t leave her mind. One brave day, she returns and does all the poses perfectly. Just kidding! She still struggles—but this time, despite imperfection, she finds fun, connection, and joy, proving that success exists outside of perfection.
2. What are 5 things you want people to know about your book?
- It’s a love letter to anyone who has ever felt not good enough or struggles with perfectionism.
- I hope it addresses those of us who’ve ever attended a yoga class and been like, ” You want me to do what?! 😉
- It’s not just for “yoga people.”
- I wrote it in 2018. It went to acquisitions at multiple publishers. It finally got an offer from a tiny publisher, and now it has a Kirkus star! This is the LONG game (don’t give up)!
- I use the refrain from it on a daily basis: Perfect’s not the point!
3. What helpful hints or tips can you offer fellow writers about writing, publishing, and promoting a book?
Again, this is the LONG game. Stick with it, but take breaks as needed. Go outside. I like to see all the creatures who don’t give a darn about my book–– it puts things into perspective for me and stops my spiraling! Also, be willing to go out on a literary limb. As long as you are kind, professional, and respectful of others, you can ask for help. Just be sure to reciprocate! Oh, and as for writing: lean into your “weird!”
4. What are 5 fun/quirky facts about yourself as an adult or child?
- I won the “best writer” trophy in 7th grade, and that felt like a million bucks.
- I was voted Senior Class Clown in HS, and now I love incorporating humor into my stories.
- I adore old-fashioned phone calls with authors where we can bounce ideas.
- I cry when I see good things happen to good people.
- I regale my husband and son with puns and science facts all day long (they still love me… for the most part).
5. What did you learn about yourself while on the journey to publishing this book?
I learned to practice what I preach–PERFECT’S NOT THE POINT!
